Photofacial

What is a photofacial? The Palomar Starlux System laser is used on the face to diminish the appearance of sun damage, pigmented lesions, and vascular lesions. Gentle pulses of intense light target melanin in the skin and hemoglobin in the blood vessels, destroying the cells and creating clearer skin

How long does a photofacial take? The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes for a recommended treatment two passes of the face with the laser handpiece.

Is the procedure uncomfortable? The tip of the handpiece is cooled by fluid from the laser machine, helping to minimize discomfort. You may experience a sensation similar to a rubber band being popped on the skin, but most patients feel little to no discomfort.

Who is a candidate for a photofacial? Patients with unwanted rosacea, sun damage, and small vessels of the face are great candidates for a photofacial. Some of these conditions can be greatly improved with just one photofacial treatment, where large areas of pigment or sun damage may take multiple treatments to completely correct. Patients with darker skin tone have an increased risk of hyper-pigmentation and may benefit from pretreating with a bleaching cream sold in the office.

What can I expect after the procedure? There is no downtime after a photofacial. Patients can expect to be flushed, or have a slight sunburn appearance for a couple hours to 24 hours following the laser treatment. Following a photofacial, you should avoid long periods of sun exposure for at least two weeks and use an SPF of 40 or above.
