5 Popular Benefits of SmartGraft FUE Hair Restoration

Thinning hair or a receding hairline can drastically impact your appearance and self-confidence, but traditional hair transplants require a sizable incision along the scalp, time off from work, and months of healing to achieve a natural look.

The SmartGraft® process uses follicular unit extraction (FUE) to minimize damage to the scalp and speed up transplantation.

Jeff Angobaldo, board-certified plastic surgeon with Renaissance Plastic Surgery in Plano, Texas, uses the SmartGraft FUE process to provide excellent hair restoration with minimal discomfort.

An overview of FUE

If you’ve looked into hair transplants before, you might be familiar with the follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) method. This is a common hair restoration procedure that takes a strip of hair from the back of your head. From there, the follicles are separated and transplanted into another part of the scalp.

FUE simplifies the process by taking the follicles individually. This is done using the SmartGraft FUE device, a closed harvesting system that quickly and gently “punches” out the hair follicle and readies it for implantation.

Benefits of using this method include:

What to expect

Your FUE hair transplant is an outpatient procedure, and the treatment itself usually lasts 5-6 hours. If you require extensive transplantation, you can split your treatment into multiple sessions.

During the procedure, the back of your head is shaved and follicles are taken from the area with the thickest growth. Care is taken to spread out the extractions, making them as discreet as possible.

The donor grafts are stored and monitored for temperature and moisture levels as they’re harvested. This preserves them until they’re placed back into your scalp, increasing the likelihood that they’ll implant successfully.

Post-graft care

After your session, treat your scalp carefully. Don’t immerse your head in water, and avoid vigorous exercise for at least a week. You might experience some sensitivity, soreness, or bruising, but this should clear up quickly.

Expect some hair loss in the following weeks. This doesn’t mean the transplant was a failure; shedding is part of the process. The follicles are still in place, and fresh hair will soon replace it. Within a few months, you have a new hairline populated with healthy, natural hair.
