The following are eight essential questions to ask during your breast augmentation consultation.
Dr. Jeff Angobaldo explains the various types of implants available, including silicone implants, silicone shells with saline solution, and all-saline implants. After reviewing your medical history, interviewing you, and examining your breasts, he makes a recommendation for the type of implant that works best for you.
Saline implants contain saltwater. If the saline leaks, your body absorbs it safely. Saline implants cost a little less than silicone implants.
Silicone implants contain a prefilled silicone gel that feels like natural breast fat. However, silicone gel implants require monitoring. You need an MRI after the third year to make sure the silicone isn’t leaking, and you need follow-ups every other year after that.
The Ideal Implant® is a saline option with overlapping implant shells that help the implant keep its shape. This reinforced structure keeps the implant from folding inward and collapsing.
Your physician has implant sizers. Try them on under a T-shirt so you can see the results clearly. You’ll be able to tell which size fits your body frame and looks the most natural. If you want a significant change to your small breasts, your surgeon explains that to avoid possible complications, it’s safer to increase breast size in stages, beginning with a midsize implant rather than a large one.
In the first weeks following the operation you may experience numbness, but your nipples should eventually have the same level of sensation as before the surgery. With large implants, a degree of sensation sometimes may be lost.
Dr. Angobaldo shows you before and after photos at your consultation to provide a realistic idea of how your breasts will look when you recover.
Don’t be afraid to ask Dr. Angobaldo what complications may arise from your surgery. It’s important to enter into any elective surgery knowing about possible issues.
Your body reacts to the trauma of surgery by forming scar tissue around the area that’s been treated; it’s a normal reaction. Sometimes the scar tissue hardens abnormally and begins to contract, detracting from the perfect breasts you had post-surgery. Some patients experience breast pain. Dr. Angobaldo uses techniques to minimize the possibility of this complication.
Breast implants last anywhere from 10 to 20 years. However, 60-year-old breasts don’t look the same as 40-year-old breasts. Depending on genetics, breastfeeding, and weight gain or loss, your breasts experience some degree of sagging as you age.
You shouldn’t have any unusual complications during pregnancy if you have breast implants. Your breasts do get larger when you’re pregnant, but this is due to changes in your body caused by pregnancy hormones.
You can safely breastfeed your baby with implants. Dr. Angobaldo asks whether you want to breastfeed in the future. He places incisions in areas that aren’t likely to interfere with breastfeeding such as under the breast, under the armpit, or your navel.
