Myth 1: Liposuction fat returns and can appear in a different area of the body. 

Fact: Liposuction is considered permanent fat removal. Instead of shrinking fat cells, liposuction totally removes them, so they can’t grow back. Therefore, they won’t appear elsewhere on your body. 

As long as you remain around the same weight you are when you have the liposuction done, your results are forever. That’s the caveat. If you gain a substantial amount of weight, of course it’s going to change how you look. By continuing to eat normal portions of healthy food and get regular exercise, you won’t see your trouble spots again. 

Myth 2: Liposuction can help you lose weight. 

Fact: Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure. Don’t expect to lose a significant amount of weight after liposuction. You may lose between two and five pounds, which won’t make much difference in how you look. Dr. Angobaldo recommends being within 25 to 30 percent of what’s considered a healthy weight for your height and body build. 

The good news is that you may be so motivated by how you look after the liposuction that you decide to lose that extra overage if you’re not quite at the weight you want to be. 

Myth 3: Liposuction will tighten loose skin.

Fact: Liposuction is not a skin-tightening procedure. If you don’t have good skin elasticity, Dr. Angobaldo recommends a skin-tightening procedure at the same time as the liposuction in order to have the outcome you’re looking for. If the skin is thin and doesn’t bounce back when you pinch it, you need skin tightening as well as liposuction; otherwise, the skin may not be smooth and tight after surgery.  

Myth 4: Liposuction is painful.

Fact: Most liposuctions require only local anesthesia, and you’ll only experience mild discomfort. However, Dr. Angobaldo wants you to be completely comfortable. He can offer sedation during the procedure so you’re not unduly anxious. 

Myth 5: Liposuction is not for men or "older" people. 

Fact: Anyone in good health can undergo liposuction. It’s one of the top five aesthetic procedures requested by men. 

You do need good skin elasticity because your skin wraps itself around your new contours after the procedure. As you age, your skin loses some elasticity.
