How Your Body Changes During Pregnancy (and How We Can Help)

You’ve given birth to one or more children. You love being a mother, but what happened to that sexy body? You look at yourself in the mirror without your clothes and don’t recognize it. Pregnancy changes your body in many ways — from the hair atop your head down to the size of your feet. Some of the changes are unsightly. But with modern medicine, you can restore your body’s shape.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jeff Angobaldo, with Renaissance Plastic Surgery, PLLC in Plano, Texas, can provide a mommy makeover for you. He customizes the treatment to correct the areas with which you’re dissatisfied. Following are just some of the ways your body changes after pregnancy and childbirth and how we can help.

Change in breast size and shape

If you had large breasts to begin with, your breasts may be even larger and more unwieldy now, or they could end up smaller. About one-third of women experience significantly larger breasts and about one-third experience smaller breasts after pregnancy.

Along with the change in size, there can be a change in shape. During pregnancy, your breasts enlarged. The ligaments supporting them began to stretch. After pregnancy, your breasts may sag when they no longer produce milk. The sagging may become more prominent with each child you have.

Breast improvement options

If your breasts now appear saggy and droopy, are asymmetrical, or if your nipples have changed, Dr. Angobaldo offers several options that can be done in combination.

Breast reduction or augmentation

If your breasts have become too large, heavy, and unwieldy, Dr. Angobaldo can provide a breast reduction. On the other hand, if your breasts have shrunk or if they’ve become asymmetrical, he can provide breast augmentation to enlarge them and correct the asymmetry.

Breast lift

If you’re happy with the size of your breasts but are unhappy with sagging skin, Dr. Angobaldo can provide a breast lift. He can restore your breasts to a rounded shape that gives you back their rounded, pre-pregnancy look.

Nipple enhancement

Your nipples may have also changed as a result of pregnancy. They may seem to be lower on your breasts now or point to the floor. A nipple lift corrects this unwanted change.

Your areola, the pigmented area around your nipple, may have become greatly enlarged. Dr. Angobaldo can reduce the size of your areolas for an enhanced appearance. A nipple lift or  reduction, or areola reduction can be done at the same time as the other breast procedures noted above.

Changes in the abdominal area

It was fun feeling your baby grow when you were pregnant, but he really stretched your skin as he grew inside you. Loose abdominal skin is normal after giving birth, but it can be really unsightly. For some women, no matter how much you exercise, that loose skin is still there. The skin may look wrinkled as well.

Abdominal improvement options

Laser liposuction or traditional liposuction are great options to remove small areas of fat that haven’t resolved with diet and exercise. Excess fat is sucked out with vacuum technology. Laser liposuction reduces recovery time and reduces bleeding.

If your abdomen needs more work than liposuction provides, Dr. Angobaldo can provide a tummy tuck. This procedure removes loose, flabby skin that may hang in folds on your abdomen. It also tightens the muscles in your abdomen that were weakened by the pregnancy. It’s best to wait until all of your childbearing is done before having the tummy tuck done.
